Phillies rumors: Jon Heyman says quiet part out loud about Philadelphia’s big trade need

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the most common teams mentioned in the rumor mill these days, as the club is linked to several potential trades ahead of the August 3 deadline. While the Phillies could be seeking bullpen help or ways to improve the lineup, insider Jon Heyman stated the obvious in his recent take about the team.

In the latest episode of “Jon Heyman’s Insider Notebook,” brought to you by Bleacher Report, the famed insider claimed the Phillies would largely benefit by acquiring a right-handed hitter. More specifically, someone who can bring power from the right side of the batter’s box.

“I’ve linked, at least speculatively, [Matt Chapman] to the Phillies,” said Heyman. “The Phillies need a right-handed bat. Interesting about the Phillies, where they find that right-handed bat. I love [Willson] Contreras for the Phillies. They need a big hitter, really… I think pie in the sky, million in one shot, Junior Caminero would really help the Phillies.”

Of the three players named by Jon Heyman, the least likely to be traded to Philadelphia is Caminero. Heyman even admitted he doesn’t think a trade would materialize with the Tampa Bay Rays, but thinks Philadelphia should give a call anyway. All things considered, every single team in MLB would love to have Junior Caminero in the lineup.

That leaves Chapman (San Francisco Giants) and Contreras (Boston Red Sox). Both are currently on teams trending down, which may mean both the Giants and Red Sox could be sellers before the trade deadline.

Chapman would likely step in and play third base for the Phillies if he were traded to the organization, providing some solid defense, too. This season, the 10-year veteran has recorded 69 hits, seven home runs, and 42 RBIs through 287 at-bats, giving him a .240 batting average and .328 OBP.

Meanwhile, Contreras could be a new first baseman in Philadelphia. Heyman described in his video how the Phillies could shift the defense around to make room for the 34-year-old slugger, suggesting moving Bryce Harper to the outfield. Through 271 at-bats so far this season, Contreras owns a .280 batting average and .375 OBP with 76 hits, 16 home runs, and 46 RBIs.
