Scottie Scheffler gets a major assist before Travelers Championship from Sam Burns

The week after a major championship is not usually one of the more eventful tournaments on the PGA Tour’s annual schedule. But that’s not the case this week as the Travelers Championship gets underway at the TPC River Highlands course in Cromwell, Connecticut. Among the notables competing in the tournament include U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, runner-up Sam Burns and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler.

Burns helped out Scheffler quite a bit prior to Thursday’s opening round. Scheffler realized he had left his belt at the rental house he is staying at this week. Instead of having to play while holding up his pants or fashioning some kind of belt out of rope or some other material, Burns took his friend and competitor back to his residence so he could retrieve the belt and play in a more comfortable manner.

The sportsmanship Burns displayed apparently helped Scheffler a great deal. He fired a 6 under par 64 in the opening round of the tournament and he finds himself tied for second place. Eric Cole is leading the tournament after the first round after delivering a 7-under 63 in the opening round.

The TPC River Highlands course has regularly produced some low scores over the years, and that was certainly the case in the opening round. Those scores could continue because the course has been rain-soaked and that works in the favor of the best players in the world. Players take advantage of the softer conditions because they are capable of pinpoint shots that lend themselves to numerous birdie opportunities.
