Tempo set bonkers WNBA scoring record in unforgettable night

The Toronto Tempo returned to the win column on Thursday with a historic rout of the Los Angeles Sparks, 125-97, at Coca-Cola Coliseum.

The Tempo bounced back from their tough loss to the Atlanta Dream on Monday and improved to 9-9. The Sparks, on the other hand, suffered their third defeat in four outings, dropping to 8-9.

Marina Mabrey went off for 53 points to tie the single-game scoring record of A’ja Wilson and Liz Cambage.

The Tempo, meanwhile, set the league record for most points in a regulation game, as reported by TSN Sports’ Chelsea Leite. It is an impressive milestone in the team’s debut season.

Toronto beat the previous mark of 120 points of the Phoenix Mercury against the Indiana Fever in 2009.

The Tempo shot 51% from the field, including 20-of-42 from three-point range. They outrebounded the Sparks, 52-30, and led by as much as 35 points.

Mabrey shot 17-of-28 from the floor, including 9-of-18 from long distance. She added six rebounds and two assists.

She had ample support from Julie Allemand, who tallied 13 points, six rebounds, 14 assists, and three steals, and Maria Conde, who added 13 points and seven rebounds. Laura Juskaite chipped in 10 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

The Tempo, who are still without Brittney Sykes due to a foot injury, had a fiery start, scoring 34 points in the first quarter. They never relented, not allowing the Sparks to taste the lead.

Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each scored 24 points to lead Los Angeles.

Toronto’s previous scoring high was 111 points against the Chicago Sky in May.

The team will return to action on Saturday against the Mercury.
