New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler picked up a loss in his start on Thursday against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston, but he still was able to pull off something historic.
Schlittler pitched for five innings and allowed four runs (none were earned), while walking two and striking out nine Red Sox hitters through 92 pitches. His performance lowered his 2026 season ERA to 1.62. No Yankees pitcher has had a lower ERA over the same stretch in his first 17 starts of a campaign in over 100 years.
“Cam Schlittler’s 1.62 ERA is the second-lowest by a Yankees pitcher in his first 17 starts of a season since ER official (1913), behind only: 1914 Ray Caldwell: 1.60,” Langs shared via a social media post on X, formerly Twitter.
The Yankees were knocked around by Boston in the fifth inning, where the Red Sox scored four runs. They had four errors in the entire game, playing a big role in their series-opening loss to their most hated rivals.
Despite the loss, Schlittler’s numbers are still looking great so far in 2026. To go with his floor-scraping ERA, he has an 8-4 record, 118 strikeouts and a 0.92 WHIP.
This continues the strong showing of 25-year-old Schlittler in his nascent career with the Yankees. In his first year in the big leagues in 2025, he posted a 4-3 record to go with a 2.96 ERA across 14 starts. He has shown improvement this season, including with his location. He had a 10.2 percent walk rate in 2025, while he entered the Red Sox game with only a 4.9 percent walk rate in 2026.
As for the Yankees, they dropped to 48-32 and will look to get even with Boston on Friday, when they give the ball to Will Warren.
