The HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands is returning to Jackson, Mississippi, and bringing some of the nation’s most celebrated marching bands along for the ride. Set for Labor Day Weekend 2026, the highly anticipated showcase will once again transform Mississippi’s capital city into the epicenter of HBCU marching band culture.
The event will unite powerhouse programs, passionate alumni, students, and thousands of fans for a weekend dedicated to music, tradition, and school pride. From electrifying performances and precision drills to crowd-pleasing musical showdowns, the Battle of the Bands promises to deliver the energy and pageantry that have made HBCU bands a cultural phenomenon across the country.
The 2026 lineup features an impressive collection of HBCU marching bands from across the South, including Jackson State University, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Langston University, Grambling State University, Tuskegee University, Bethune-Cookman University, Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Southern University, and Talladega College.
Representing the SWAC, SIAC, NAIA, and other proud HBCU traditions, the participating bands will showcase a variety of musical styles, performances, and traditions that have captivated audiences for generations. Mississippi fans will be treated to a special in-state showdown as Jackson State, Alcorn State, and Mississippi Valley State all take the field, creating a highly anticipated battle among three of the state’s most recognizable programs.
While the marching bands will take center stage, organizers say the weekend is designed to be a full-scale cultural celebration that extends far beyond the stadium. Attendees can expect live entertainment and special performances, the HBCU Labor Day Fan Fest and Tailgate Experience, which is free with RSVP; performances from high school and collegiate step teams; majorette showcases; dance crews; food trucks; local vendors; giveaways; merchandise opportunities; and appearances from celebrity guests and surprise performers.
The event is expected to attract more than 50,000 fans to Veterans Memorial Stadium, making it one of the largest HBCU cultural gatherings of the year. Festivities will begin with the HBCU Labor Day Fan Fest at noon, followed by stadium gates opening at 4 p.m. The Battle of the Bands is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
“This is the lineup that band fans have been asking for,” said Alex Davis, founder and president of the HBCU Labor Day Classic. “When you bring together legendary programs like Jackson State, Southern University, Bethune-Cookman, Tuskegee, Grambling, Alcorn State, Talladega, Langston, and Mississippi Valley State, you’re creating an experience unlike anything else in the country. We are excited to welcome thousands of visitors to Jackson for what will undoubtedly be our biggest event ever.”
More than just a showcase of musical excellence, the HBCU Labor Day Classic Battle of the Bands has become a celebration of the culture, tradition, and pride that define the HBCU experience. Tickets are currently on sale, with early-bird pricing available through Sept. 5, 2026.
