After the chief content officer (COO) of WWE, Paul “Triple H” Levesque, claimed that fans take the product “too seriously,” the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer retorted.
Trips told Stephen A. Smith that fans took WWE “too seriously” while they are just there to “entertain.” Meltzer took issue with that stance, claiming it makes him look “desperate.”
“Man, you should never talk like that. It comes across desperate,” said Meltzer. “You’re saying quit having an opinion on our product. You want people to spend hundreds of dollars on tickets but also say don’t take it seriously.
If they didn’t take it seriously, they sure aren’t spending that kind of money on tickets,” he continued.
Why Triple H said WWE fans take it “too seriously”
During an interview with Smith (via Fightful Select), Triple H claimed that some fans “lose perspective” when watching the product.
“The other aspect of that is I think that people lose perspective of sometimes is, we’re just fun, man. We’re fun and sometimes people take it too seriously, sometimes people get too caught up in it, but it’s there to entertain, man,” he claimed. “There’s a lot of stuff going on in the world. If you just want to turn off for a couple of hours and tune into something cool that you can just lose yourself in and have a good time, WWE is the place to do it.
If you’ve never seen it live, I’m telling you, come to a live event, come to one of our PLEs, come to a TV. There’s nothing like it in entertainment,” he continued.
On one hand, he isn’t wrong. WWE is a form of entertainment (it stands for World Wrestling Entertainment, after all). However, fans are passionate, that’s what makes them fanatics. They get engulfed in interesting storylines.
Perhaps this wasn’t the ringing endorsement WWE fans needed to hear ahead of Night of Champions, which sets up the company’s second biggest PLE of the year, SummerSlam.
