Angels rumors: Why LA may not sell despite another terrible season

The Los Angeles Angels are in the middle of another disappointing season, yet they may not sell at the MLB trade deadline. The Angels deciding not to sell would seemingly be a mistake, but it is a strategy they may implement nonetheless. MLB insider Jon Heyman shared an update on the Angels’ potential trade deadline approach, via MLB Network.

“We can never assume anything about the Angels,” Heyman said. “You would think they would be a seller, but they are very reluctant to sell. If they did sell, they could have a great, great sale.”

Heyman then explained that players such as Reid Detmers, Jo Adell and Jose Soriano (and obviously Mike Trout) are not free agents after the season, which is part of why the Angels reportedly do not feel urgency to trade them away.

“I don’t think (Angels owner) Arte Moreno, if he doesn’t want to trade Detmers and Soriano, he’s not going to want to trade a legend like Mike Trout,” Heyman continued. “So that’s the one team I would say we really can’t predict what they’re going to do.”

The expectation is that Trout will not be traded. It seems as if Adell, Detmers and Soriano also won’t be moved. The problem is that LA is not close to contending. Rebuilding is clearly the path forward for the Angels — like it has been for years — but the team’s refusal to rebuild has left them at or near the bottom of the American League West for a long time. The ball club has not reached the postseason since 2014.

At the moment, they are in last place in the AL West with a 34-48 record.
