The Detroit Pistons’ contract negotiations with restricted free agent Jalen Duren have taken an unexpected turn, and the standoff could have major implications for the franchise’s offseason plans.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Duren was “underwhelmed” by Detroit’s initial contract offer and intends to explore sign-and-trade scenarios once they become permissible Tuesday. The development has prompted questions about whether the Pistons could intensify their pursuit of established stars such as Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown or Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard.
“According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the negotiation is ongoing, the gap between the sides is large enough that Duren is considering ways to land elsewhere, with the sign-and-trade route deemed preferable to signing an offer sheet with another team that the Pistons could, and likely would, match,” Amick wrote.
“And with some of the game’s best players potentially available this summer, including the Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown and the LA Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, the question now becomes whether the Pistons might be willing to engage in those sorts of scenarios when that time comes.”
Amick later reported on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Duren plans to explore sign-and-trade possibilities.
“All-NBA forward Jalen Duren was underwhelmed by the Detroit Pistons’ initial offer in restricted free agency and is planning to explore sign-and-trade scenarios when they are permitted on Tuesday, league sources told The Athletic,” Amick wrote.
Kawhi Leonard, Jaylen Brown remain tied to evolving Pistons plans

The timing is significant because Detroit has already been linked to several high-profile players this offseason. Amick reported the Pistons previously showed serious interest in Austin Reaves before the guard re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. The organization has also been connected to Brown, Leonard and Tyler Herro, who was recently traded from the Miami Heat to the Milwaukee Bucks as part of the Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster.
Amick noted that Duren’s contract talks have been complicated by the contrast between his regular-season production and his playoff performance. The 22-year-old averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and shot 65 percent from the field in 70 regular-season games while finishing sixth in the league in Player Impact Estimate. However, his production dipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds during Detroit’s 14-game postseason run.
Detroit also has another major internal priority. First-team All-Defense selection Ausar Thompson is eligible for a rookie-scale extension that could be worth as much as five years and $162 million.
A pursuit of Leonard, however, appears unlikely. Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported Wednesday that the two-time Finals MVP would not sign a contract extension with Detroit if traded there.
“Sources say that Leonard would not have interest in signing an extension with Detroit in the event that the Pistons traded for him this summer,” Fischer wrote.
Jalen Duren talks could fuel sign-and-trade scenario with Celtics

Fischer and Marc Stein later reported that Detroit’s front office has effectively backed away from pursuing Leonard because of that stance.
“That knowledge appears to have quashed any Detroit pursuit of Leonard, sources say, as Trajan Langdon’s front office continues to assess its options for adding offensive punch and shooting prowess to Cade Cunningham’s supporting cast,” Fischer and Stein wrote.
Brown, meanwhile, remains a more intriguing possibility.
“One more fascinating scenario that we’ve been advised not to rule out completely: A possible sign-and-trade run at Boston’s perennial All-Star Brown,” Fischer and Stein wrote.
The report noted such a deal would almost certainly require Detroit to include Duren in a sign-and-trade, a scenario that would conflict with the organization’s long-held belief that Duren and Thompson are foundational pieces alongside Cunningham.
Even so, Fischer and Stein reported that the current gap in negotiations has opened the door for Detroit to at least consider possibilities that previously seemed unlikely.
Whether the Pistons ultimately reach a long-term agreement with Duren or pivot toward a blockbuster move remains uncertain. For now, the outcome of those negotiations could shape the direction of one of the NBA’s busiest offseasons.
