Senators ink Jordan Spence to $20 million extension

The Ottawa Senators had a plan to secure their blue line this offseason, and they did so with this move, extending Jordan Spence, according to TSN’s Bruce Garrioch.

“[Senators] are closing in on a contract extension with Jordan Spence. Anticipate it will be in the four year range. Could be done today,” Garrioch wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Just minutes after Garrioch made the report, the deal was announced, and it’s worth four years, $20 million. This is good news for the Senators, as he was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

Spence had a solid season for the Senators, as the defenceman played 73 games while finishing with even goals and 24 assists. He was traded to the Senators last summer from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for third- and sixth-round draft picks. Throughout his career, Spence has 15 goals and 77 assists in 253 games between the two clubs.

The Senators are probably not done making moves, and they have recently been rumored to be the frontrunners to acquire Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish, according to James Murphy of RG.

“They were already talking to the Ducks before they traded Brady Tkachuk, and then they got [William] Eklund. Now, that’s picked up again. There’s history between the player and GM Steve Staios, and obviously the player is familiar with the area, having played for the Ottawa Valley Titans way back. I know Staios likes McTavish a lot,” Murphy said.

It will be interesting to see what else the Senators have up their sleeves as the offseason continues.
