Celtics’ Jaylen Brown responds to wild ‘seventh-best’ claim from ‘analytics guy’

Ever since Jaylen Brown’s name was placed in the conversation for Giannis Antetokounmpo trade conversation, questions have swirled about the Finals MVP’s future with the Boston Celtics.

One of the better two-way wings in the NBA today, Brown has largely been expected to draw a return similar to the “Greek Freak” if he were moved to a new team before the 2026-27 season, but is he worth it? In the opinion of an analytics guy trusted by ESPN’s Bobby Marks, that might not have been the case, as he views Brown as a mid-roster guy who doesn’t necessarily deserve a starting spot on a quality team.

“I had an analytics guy tell me, ‘We view [Jaylen Brown] as the seventh-best player on a TEAM,'” Marks said on SiriusXM NBA Radio.

This quote, aggregated by NBA Central, caught the attention of Brown, who blasted numbers guys for trying to control the narrative when they know nothing about actually hooping.

“Analytics nowadays used to discredit and control narratives,” Brown wrote. “Roll the ball out none of these guys better than me on both ends. Who does he work for?”

Are the “none of these guys” other players around the NBA, or the analytics guys who use their statistics to “discredit and control narratives?” Either way, considering Brown’s status as a true two-way star, capable of putting up 28.7, 5.1, and 6.9 with Jayson Tatum on the bench, he’d likely get buckets either way.

Will Brown ultimately get moved? Only time will tell, but until that day comes – if it does at all – his status around the association will be discussed ad nauseam, and Brown might just comment on it too.
