Nuggets rumors: Will Nikola Jokic sign contract extension this offseason?

With two years left on a five-year, $276.1 million contract, Denver Nuggets All-Star Nikola Jokic is expected to hold off contract negotiations this summer. After trading the No. 26 pick to the San Antonio Spurs, the Nuggets selected Trevon Brazile with the No. 35 pick in this year’s draft. He’s a player that Denver hopes will be able to help the team right way in his rookie season.

At the same time, the Nuggets hope to hold off on negotiating a new deal with Jokic, according to The Stein Line’s Marc Stein.

“Holding off on a contract extension this summer is under consideration for the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokić, league sources tell [Jake Fischer] and me,” Stein said.

After a very busy offseason last year, when the Nuggets acquired players like Cameron Johnson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Bruce Brown, and Jonas Valanciunas as reinforcements to compete against the 2025 champion Oklahoma City Thunder, the Nuggets failed to advance to the second round of the playoffs. Denver was eliminated, 4-2, by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

However, Jokic’s young supporting cast, such as Nuggets players like Christian Braun and Julian Strawther made impressive strides in their respective growth last season, which is a positive development for a Nuggets team looking to return to the upper echelon of the Western Conference standings.

After being selected fourth overall by the Bulls in this week’s draft, rookie Caleb Wilson revealed Nuggets star Nikola Jokic’s influence on his development ahead of playing in the NBA. For Wilson, Jokic is not only his favorite player, but someone he could relate to due to his atheltic limitations, he said, per Monumental Sports’ Chase Hughes.

“I really like [Nikola] Jokic, he’s my favorite player. Even before he was MVP,” Wilson said. “I really liked how he played. I really wasn’t that athletic when I was younger, believe it or not, so to just see him as a halfcourt hub and not be that athletic was really cool for me.”

Jokic will be entering his 11th season with Nuggets.
