Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole continues alarming struggles at Fenway Park vs. Red Sox

The New York Yankees needed Gerrit Cole to stabilize a tense rivalry series Saturday, but another rough outing at Fenway Park left the club with more concern after a 4-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

The six-time MLB All-Star took the mound Saturday afternoon, already fighting through a tricky June. The Yankees’ flamethrower carried a 5.95 ERA for the month and a 5.52 career ERA at Fenway Park before facing the Red Sox in the third game of the series.

The Red Sox attacked him early and often. Boston produced nine hard-hit balls, seven hits, four earned runs, and two home runs before Cole exited in the sixth inning.

New York Daily News Sports’ Gary Phillips shared the uncharacteristic line on X, formerly Twitter, after Cole’s outing ended in another rally.

“Rough outing for Gerrit Cole, who exits after 5.1 innings, 7 hits, 4 ER, 2 HR and a Caleb Durbin single. The #RedSox had 9 hard-hit balls off Cole, who came into the game with a 5.95 ERA this month and a 5.52 career ERA at Fenway. #Yankees”

The numbers showed more than ordinary traffic. Boston consistently squared up Cole’s mistakes, turning the outing into another warning sign for New York’s rotation.

The timing made the performance more troubling. The Yankees had already dropped the first two games of the series and needed their ace to help stop the slide.

Instead, Cole failed to finish six innings and pushed more work onto the bullpen during a demanding stretch. Fenway continues to create problems for him, and Saturday deepened that pattern.

For the Yankees, the 35-year-old remains essential to their postseason hopes. However, his June struggles now demand attention before they become a larger summer issue for a club trying to stay ahead in the AL East.
