The Toronto Blue Jays had such high expectations entering the 2026 Major League Baseball season. Toronto had just made the World Series in 2025, and nearly defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic.
This season instead has gone totally in the wrong direction. Toronto has a losing record about half way through the campaign. As a result, the Blue Jays are looking at ways to add help before the trade deadline. Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman may find himself out the door in Toronto.
“If they still find themselves south of .500 in late July, it could behoove them to start looking ahead to 2027, which would mean shopping their pending free agents. That list includes Gausman, who is in the final season of a five-year, $110 million contract,” MLB.com reported. “The 35-year-old has had a rough month (7.62 ERA in June), but his track record would make him one of the most coveted starters on the market if Toronto decides to punt on 2026.”
This season, Gausman has a 4.36 ERA in 17 starts.
Blue Jays have struggled this year
The Blue Jays have spent nearly the entire season under .500. That was not expected, especially since the club spent big money this last offseason to sign free agent starting pitcher Dylan Cease.
The Blue Jays enter Saturday’s action with a 39-43 record. Toronto is still in the mix for a postseason berth, despite their setbacks.
“Toronto nonetheless entered Friday mere percentage points behind the Astros for the third AL Wild Card spot. At this point, the Blue Jays seem more likely to be buyers than sellers,” the outlet added.
That could obviously change if the losses keep coming. Heading into Saturday, Toronto is nine and a half games out of first in the American League East. Toronto is currently in third place in that division.
The Blue Jays play the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
