Blue Jackets’ Zach Werenski draws early trade interest from Stars, Hurricanes, Flyers

There is a lot of trade interest this offseason in Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. Werenski is one of the most-talked about players this NHL offseason, with multiple teams wanting to trade for him.

“There will be at least a dozen teams who will inquire over time but some early teams to monitor with interest in Zach Werenski: Dallas, Carolina and Philadelphia,” NHL insider Pierre LeBrun posted to X, formerly Twitter.

During the 2025-26 season, the defenseman posted a whopping 81 points in 75 games. His days in Columbus are expected to be numbered.

“Nothing imminent, but the Blue Jackets have started listening to teams calling on Zach Werenski, sources confirm. The CBJ are aware that the Norris Trophy winner is unlikely to extend past his deal,” LeBrun added in a separate post. “No guarantee he’s dealt this summer but Jackets’ best deal could be now versus waiting a year. We’ll see how it develops.”

Columbus failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs this past season. The Blue Jackets posted just 92 points during the season. Despite that struggle, Werenski was invaluable. He was voted as the NHL’s top defenseman.

“Werenski, who has played his entire 10-season NHL career with the Blue Jackets, is second on their all-time list with 465 points (135 goals, 330 assists) in 642 games; Rick Nash leads with 547 points (289 goals, 258 assists),” NHL.com reported.

Of the three teams listed in this report, all of them made the Stanley Cup Playoffs this past season. Carolina went on to win the Stanley Cup. The Stars lost to the Minnesota Wild in the opening round. Philadelphia defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, before bowing to the Hurricanes.

Time will tell if Werenski gets traded soon.
