The Dallas Stars fell in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Minnesota Wild. This led to Stars GM Jim Nill making it clear that there will be changes this offseason.
While the front office is talking about changes for the 2026-27 season, ownership is talking about changes for 2031, releasing a statement about a potential move to Plano, Texas.
“I’d like to thank Mayor [John] Muns and the entire Plano City Council for their support, and their approval of our letter of intent and several other items connected to the redevelopment of The Shops at Willow Bend,” Stars owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statement. “We look forward to taking the next steps in the journey toward making Plano our new home in 2031.”
The Stars originally called Reunion Arena in downtown Dallas their home when they moved from Minnesota in 1993. The arena was shared with the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs and Stars then moved to the American Airlines Center in 2001, where they have played since. A move to Plano would be the first time the team has played its home games on a regular basis outside of Dallas since the move from Minnesota.
Currently, the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Wings, and Texas Rangers all play in Arlington, which is west of Dallas. Meanwhile, FC Dallas of the MLS plays in Frisco, north of the city. Plano sits northwest of Dallas, but just miles from the team facility, which is currently in Frisco. The city is working hard to build a sports and entertainment district that will welcome the NHL team.
“Plano has built a reputation as a city that welcomes world-class partners and community-focused investment,” said Plano Mayor John Muns. “These actions are a significant first step as we evaluate the potential for a thoughtfully designed sports and entertainment district that reflects the priorities and values of our community.”
The next step is setting up a special election on a venue tax. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are also looking at moving out of downtown Dallas, but not with the Stars.
