Gianni Infantino a giant phony over alleged decision to revoke Iran fans’ ticket allocation

International border friction is casting a shadow over the buildup to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This was highlighted by US immigration authorities denying entry to elite Somali referee Omar Artan.

Despite holding a valid visa and recently being recognized as the 2025 CAF Male Referee of the Year, Artan was flagged for vetting concerns during a routine Customs and Border Protection inspection in Miami on June 6. His forced return to Istanbul exemplifies a strict wave of administrative crackdowns, revealing deeper issues within the tournament’s structure.

A recent investigative report by ESPN unveiled more severe geopolitical interference, particularly FIFA’s controversial decision to revoke the ticket allocation for Iranian supporters just days before their June 15 opener against New Zealand in Inglewood.

Traditionally, member federations are entitled to an 8% allocation of stadium capacity for their loyal fanbases; however, escalating political tensions, intensified by US military actions against Iran earlier this year, have left the Iranian federation completely stripped of its fan seating.

As a result, the team has been forced to base its pre-tournament operations across the border in Tijuana, Mexico, and several team officials have faced outright visa rejections. This heavy-handed restriction exposes FIFA President Gianni Infantino as insincere; in 2017, he explicitly promised that all qualifying teams and their fans would have unrestricted access to the host country, stating that a tournament could not properly exist otherwise.

This institutional hostility has sparked widespread outrage among participating nations.

Uzbekistan manager Fabio Cannavaro has led the backlash, criticizing the host nation’s aggressive security operations. On June 8, Cannavaro’s squad underwent intense drug-dog and metal-detector screenings in New York, while Senegal’s team faced invasive baggage checks directly on a Texas airport tarmac.

Additionally, the Iranian team is restricted to fly-in visits only on match days, and Iraqi hero Aymen Hussein endured a grueling seven-hour detention at the airport. As a result, the co-hosts are facing mounting criticism for turning a global celebration into a logistical nightmare.
