Mets rumors: Recently demoted 2025 All-Star an obvious trade candidate

The New York Mets are probably going to sell ahead of the MLB trade deadline. While a number of big name players could be mentioned as trade candidates, one former All-Star may also draw interest. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, left-handed pitcher David Peterson could emerge as a trade candidate.

Peterson, 30, earned an All-Star selection during the 2025 campaign. He finished the season with a 4.22 ERA across 30 starts, but Peterson made a significant impact overall.

Through 13 outings in 2026 (seven starts), however, he has turned in a 5.13 ERA. Peterson was recently demoted to the bullpen. While the move may have been surprising since Peterson was an All-Star last year, his struggles early in the season were difficult to ignore. Additionally, Peterson was not exactly dominant last year despite his All-Star selection.

The Mets will be an intriguing ball club to follow ahead of the trade deadline. They have many decisions to make. Peterson will not receive the most attention, but he is a pitcher who could make a difference for a contender.

Peterson has certainly displayed the ability to find success at the big league level in the past. Perhaps a fresh start would help him get back on track. He also offers versatility, as Peterson can pitch both in the starting rotation and out of the bullpen.

Updates on Mets trade rumors and reports will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available. For now, the Mets are set to play the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at 7:10 PM EST.
