Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet trade in danger of going Chris Sale route amid White Sox resurgence

The 2016 trade of Chris Sale from the Chicago White Sox to the Boston Red Sox was one of the biggest blockbusters in recent MLB memory. Sale was traded for a surplus of young prospects, including Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Victor Diaz. The deal helped the Red Sox win the World Series in 2018, and Sale was one of the best pitchers in baseball for much of his Boston tenure. However, the Red Sox also had some years of struggle with Sale on the roster, and he ended up having the best season of his career after departing for the Atlanta Braves.

The White Sox, meanwhile, had one of the best farm systems in baseball for a few years, but players including Moncada and Kopech never lived up to their potential, and the team’s rebuild eventually had to be blown up. The White Sox have since embraced another rebuild in recent years, and there is just as much promise this go around.

Currently, the White Sox are 34-31 and in second place in the American League Central, largely because they have a young and exciting roster that has been built through trades for prospects and draft-day hits. One of the team’s most notable trades as of recent was another deal involving a superstar pitcher that netted a bunch of prospects from the Red Sox.

On Dec. 11, 2024, Chicago traded Garrett Crochet to the Red Sox for Kyle Teel, Braden Montgomery, Chase Meidroth, and Wikelman Gonzalez. With Montgomery, the team’s top outfield prospect, being called up to the majors, every player included in the Crochet deal has officially reached the big leagues.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, are 27-37 and in last place in the AL East. This trade is starting to look more like a win for the White Sox than it appeared at first glance, and it may turn out better than the Sale trade did for the South Side team.
