Padres make Xander Bogaerts move ahead of Reds clash

The San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds are set to meet for Game 2 of a 3-game series at Petco Park later on Tuesday night. The Friars took Game 1 with a 6-2 win after a late rally saw the bats come alive. The Friars’ offense has been the worst in baseball this season, and a recent update from the team will not help the matter.

The Padres announced that they have placed shortstop Xander Bogaerts on paternity leave as he and his wife are expecting a child any day now. Tuesday night is Bogaerts’ bobblehead night as well. As a result of the move, the Friars have recalled infielder Will Wagner. The Padres entire bench is now composed of players who started the season in the minor leagues.

Bogaerts has been a complicated addition to the Padres’ roster the last three seasons. He is owed a lot of money and is under control for almost a full decade. He’s had his ups and downs, but this team needs him to be at his best. Right now, the hitting woes between him, Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Jackson Merrill are hurting this ballclub.

San Diego is 34-31 on the season, which is good for a tie for second in the NL West division. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Padres are both 7.5 games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Not even two weeks ago, San Diego was atop the division. The month of May was a disaster for this team, and they aren’t necessarily on the right track to begin June either. This team’s fate may be in the hands of general manager A.J. Preller to go out and make a big trade.
