2026 World Cup Group E predictions: Who joins Germany in the next round?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is almost here and teams are making their final preparations to represent their country on the world’s biggest stage. The 48-nation tournament sees it’s first expansion since 1998 as 12 groups of four countries will face off in the group stage. We’ll make our predictions on which teams could advance through Group E in 2026.

Group E consists of Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, and Ecuador. Germany leads the pack with the second-most all-time World Cup titles (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) and come in as -230 sportsbook favorites to win Group E. Right behind them is Ecuador at +350 to win the group, making their fifth World Cup appearance and hoping to make it past the group stage for just the second time since they did it in 2006.

Ivory Coast will make its fourth World Cup appearance, their first since 2014 as they try to advance to the knockout stages for the first time. Finally, Curaçao comes into their first-ever World Cup as a cinderella story and the smallest country to ever compete in the tournament with a population of 158,000.

While the Germans remain the clear team likely to advance in Group E’s top spot, the competition for second place and a potential third place entry will be fierce. Let’s take a look at each team’s case for making the knockout stages.

Germany

FIFA World Ranking: 10th
Schedule: June 14 vs. Curaçao / June 20 vs. Ivory Coast / June 25 vs. Ecuador
Prediction: Winners of Group E, 2-1-0 record (7 pts)

Team Germany comes into 2026 with a great deal to prove following early exits in 2018 and 2022. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann will make his first World Cup appearance as the nation’s youngest-ever coach at 38 years old. Legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer makes yet another World Cup appearance at 40 years old as 10-time Bundesliga champion Joshua Kimmich will wear Germany’s Captain band for the first time in his third World Cup.

Expect Germany to cruise past an energetic Curaçao squad as they out-class them with crisp passing and dominating the time of possession. Ivory coast should offer more resistance in Germany’s second showing, but we can still expect them to come out on top. The final game against Ecuador will be their toughest test during this stage as two of the better defenses in the tournament will be squaring off. Don’t be surprised if this one ends in a draw with Germany still advancing comfortable to the knockout stage.

Curaçao

FIFA World Ranking: 82nd
Schedule: June 14 vs. Germany / June 20 vs. Ecuador / June 25 vs. Ivory Coast
Prediction: Eliminated, 0-1-2 record (1 pts)

Curaçao has already made FIFA World Cup history with their unlikely qualification as the tournament’s smallest country ever, but they also overcome a major head coaching shift as the team revolted against new manager Fred Rutten, forcing former coach Dick Advocaat out of retirement to become the tournament’s oldest-ever head coach at 78-years old. Their entire journey has been a feel-good story and they’ll be garnering massive support from fans of all nations during this tournament.

They’re led by captain Leandro Bacuna who owns 71 international appearances for Curaçao, tied for most all-time along with current goalkeeper Eloy Room. While we shouldn’t expect Curaçao to put up much resistance against Germany or Ecuador in their first two games, it could be a historic finish for them nonetheless if they can at least tie Ivory Coast in an all-out effort for their final group stage match.

Ivory Coast

FIFA World Ranking: 34th
Schedule: June 14 vs. Ecuador / June 20 vs. Germany / June 25 vs. Curaçao
Prediction: Eliminated, 0-2-1 record (2 pts)

Ivory Coast comes into this Group E with potential to disrupt the standings. The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winners will bring their 4-3-3 formation behind coach Emerse Faé who prioritizes strong defensive play and capitalizing on the counterattack. Former Barcelona and Milan midfielder Franck Kessié will wear the captain’s band as the team will hope to renew their glory days from the early 2010s.

Pairing against the one of the strongest defenses in the world in Ecuador during their first game, expect both teams to remain staunch as we see potentially see a 0-0 stalemate. They don’t stand much more of a chance against Germany and their final game against Curaçao should bring another ‘draw’ as the underdogs from the Caribbean play their best match of the tournament.

Ecuador

FIFA World Ranking: 23rd
Schedule: June 14 vs. Ivory Coast / June 20 vs. Curaçao / June 25 vs. Germany
Prediction: Advance to Knockout Stage, 1-2-0 record (5 pts)

Ecuador comes in with a storied history and great talent on their roster, but they’ve only advanced past the group stage once when they made it to the Round of 16 in 2006. Veteran captain Enner Valencia will be looking to build upon his 49 goals in 105 international appearances while a key starter like Pedro Vite sees his first World Cup.

Ecuador may be shocked by an initial ‘draw’ against Ivory Coast thanks to two top defenses in Group E, but they should cruise to a decisive win against Curaçao in their second fixture. They’ll hold for another ‘draw’ in a back-and-forth match against Germany to comfortably advance to their second-ever Knockout Stage.
