Kodai Senga’s concerning injury cancels scheduled rehab start

The New York Mets initially placed Kodai Senga on the 15-day IL due to lumbar spine inflammation. However, with Senga set to finally make his first rehab assignment start, it appears he is dealing with a new concerning injury.

Reports indicate that the 33-year-old right-hander suffered nerve irritation in his right arm, according to Jorge Castillo of ESPN. Senga’s scheduled start for Double-A Binghampton on Tuesday has been officially canceled.

“Kodai Senga will not make his scheduled start for Double-A Binghamton today due to nerve irritation in his right upper arm, the Mets announced,” reported Castillo.

The severity of the new injury is not yet known, as the Mets will likely have to evaluate Senga’s arm before determining his official status. Either way, it appears he could be in line to remain on the IL for quite a bit longer.

A return to the mound would be ideal for the Mets, as the Japanese native has been solid throughout most of his career. However, the 2026 campaign has not been kind to Kodai Senga. His 9.00 ERA this season is well below his 3.39 career ERA. Additionally, he owns a 1.950 WHIP while totaling 23 strikeouts through 20.0 innings this season.

While Senga continues to navigate his injury, the Mets are relying on an inconsistent starting rotation. Manager Carlos Mendoza is utilizing a go-to four starters in Freddy Peralta, Nolan McLean, Christian Scott, and Sean Manaea. Meanwhile, David Peterson into the rotation periodically, but is working as a bulk reliever right now.

With the club awaiting Koda Senga’s injury status, the Mets will be focused on the next game on the schedule. New York will take on the St. Louis Cardinals for the first matchup of a three-game series on Tuesday. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7:10 p.m. EST.
