While the Milwaukee Brewers try to bounce back after a grueling game, they’re also monitoring the injury recovery of Brandon Woodruff. And the Brewers made a roster move that will catch fans’ attention.
The team sent Woodruff to the Rookie ACL Brewers for a rehab assignment, according to a post on X by the Brewers.
There isn’t an announced return date, but the fact that Woodruff will be facing game-situational hitters is a big deal. Woodruff hasn’t pitched for the big-league club since April 30.
Brewers would welcome SP Brandon Woodruff back to rotation
Milwaukee stands in first place in the NL Central. The Brewers are 41-23 and have a 5.5-game lead over the second-place Cardinals.
But the pitching staff needs help. They have one of the best pitchers in baseball with Jacob Misiorowski at the front of the rotation. However, Kyle Harrison is coming off a terrible outing in the desert against the Athletics.
After that, it’s fill in and hope. The Brewers rank No. 21 in baseball in quality starts. That means they are taxing their bullpen at a high rate over the first 2 1/2 months of the season.
And Woodruff was dealing before he got injured. He posted a 3.60 ERA with a WHIP of 1.03, totaling 25 strikeouts in 30 innings.
The hope is that the Brewers will have Woodruff back in the rotation well before the All-Star break. That’s realistic right now. Although the number of starts before the break is certainly a gray area.
Woodruff said removing a cyst in his shoulder joint required a few changes after the procedure, according to MLB.com.
“Ever since surgery, my release point has been getting higher, and I’ve been pinching my [shoulder] off,” Woodruff said. “I think it’s just a byproduct of having the surgery and finding a comfortable way to throw. And I got stuck in those patterns. I had an adjustment just two days ago, and [Wednesday] was the first time throwing with it.”
