The Edmonton Oilers are trying to regroup after a disappointing run in this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. Edmonton bounced out of the playoffs after losing a series to the Anaheim Ducks. While Edmonton looks to move on, fans wonder about the future of star center Connor McDavid.
Oilers fans may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Team broadcaster Bob Stauffer is on the record saying he thinks McDavid will be staying in Edmonton for a long time.
“I don’t think there’s anybody more committed to Edmonton than Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl… I expect the next contract to be a seven-year extension,” Stauffer said about McDavid’s future in an interview with Sportsnet 590 The FAN.

That would of course be huge for Edmonton, if true. During the 2025-26 regular season, McDavid posted 138 points. He posted 48 goals for the club. McDavid is considered the heart and soul of this Oilers team.
McDavid is one of the faces of the NHL. He has done just about everything with the Oilers except win the Stanley Cup. McDavid has posted 156 career points in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but never won a title.
McDavid and the team came close, though. The Oilers made back-to-back trips to the Stanley Cup Final in 2024 and 2025. Edmonton lost the championship in each of those seasons to the Florida Panthers.
Following the team’s loss to the Ducks this year, Edmonton parted ways with head coach Kris Knoblauch. The team is still looking for a head coach. Mike Babcock, who had a bad parting with the Columbus Blue Jackets a few years ago, is seen as the top candidate for the job.
Reports show that the Oilers are essentially closing in on a deal with Babcock. Babcock won a Stanley Cup championship coaching the Detroit Red Wings in 2008.
