Braves’ Drake Baldwin injury update will catch fans’ attention

The Atlanta Braves and Chicago White Sox will meet for an intriguing matchup between two interleague squads. Tuesday night is Game 1 of a three-game series with Grant Holmes on the mound for the Braves and Brandon Eisert for the Sox.

Atlanta will continue to be without catcher Drake Baldwin, who is turning into one of the best catchers in the game. He has an oblique injury that he suffered a few weeks back, and after manager Walt Weiss’ previous update, Baldwin should return any time between June 16 and June 21.

Again, ahead of this series, Weiss shared another update.

“Baldwin is scheduled to face live batting practice on Thursday and Friday, and if all goes well, the plan is for him to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday and Sunday.”

This could lead him back to the lineup by early next week. Not that the Braves desperately need him back, but the quicker, the better. The ATL is 45-21 on the season, which is good for the best record in the league by far. They are three games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers. Even without Baldwin and his MVP-caliber play, the Braves are doing just fine.

Before the injury, you could put Baldwin in that MVP discussion with Shohei Ohtani and even his teammate Matt Olson. The catcher is hitting .303 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs in 48 games played. He was almost at an RBI per game rate. His OPS is an astounding .931 with six doubles and 24 walks.

First pitch of the series is at 7:40 ET.
