Yankees’ Gerrit Cole gets assessment from Red Sox legend that will catch fans’ attention

New York Yankees star Gerrit Cole made his return from Tommy John surgery earlier this season. While Cole only made three starts leading into Tuesday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians, the Yankees ace has performed well. Early in Tuesday’s game, Boston Red Sox legend Pedro Martinez shared an assessment of Cole’s performance on X, formerly Twitter.

“Gerrit Cole: I’m very pleased with how he looks. He’s got velocity, his outings have been strong, and his command has been there. All of that tells me he’s feeling good and healthy,” Martinez wrote.

Martinez knows what he is talking about. He earned three Cy Young awards during his Hall of Fame career. Cole, who will likely be in the Hall of Fame someday as well, has clearly impressed Martinez so far.

Cole entered the game on Tuesday night with a 2.00 ERA through three starts during the 2026 season. He had not previously pitched in the big leagues since 2024 due to the aforementioned Tommy John surgery. The right-handed hurler is hoping to lead the Yankees to their first World Series championship since 2009 this year.

The Yankees are currently in second place in the American League East standings. New York holds a 39-26 record at the moment. They are only percentage points behind the 38-25 Tampa Bay Rays for first place, though.

On Monday, the Yankees defeated the Guardians by a final score of 7-5. Gerrit Cole and the Yankees are hoping to earn another big victory against a talented Guardians ball club on Tuesday night in Cleveland.
