Tigers get 2 huge injury updates as Tarik Skubal’s return draws near

While rumors surround the Detroit Tigers and star Tarik Skubal, the goal for the team and the pitcher is to get healthy after getting surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow. As the Tigers’ starting pitcher in Skubal is recording sessions to return soon, the team has other updates regarding the pitching rotation.

Besides Skubal, Detroit has been dealing with other injuries to pitchers, such as Casey Mize and Justin Verlander, both of whom have rehab starts on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Mize’s rehab start will be with the Tigers’ Single-A ball club, while Verlander will pitch at the Triple-A level.

“With Tarik Skubal nearing a return, Casey Mize making a rehab start tonight for Sing,le-A Lakeland, and Justin Verlander making a rehab start tomorrow for Triple-A Toledo,” Beck wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Mize has been dealing with an adductor injury, marking his last game on May 27 in the 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Angels, where he pitched four innings. As for Verlander, he’s had a hip injury that has kept him out since his only appearance for the team on March 30 in the 9-6 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Looking at Skubal, he had just recorded a rehab start and will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, which is considered maybe “the final hurdle” before returning, per Beck.

“Tarik Skubal said he feels good after Sunday’s rehab start. He’ll throw a bullpen session Wednesday, likely the final hurdle before slotting him back into rotation. He usually throws a bullpen 3 days before a start, so perhaps a Wednesday session hints at a return Saturday,” Beck wrote on X.

At any rate, it remains to be seen when Skubal, Verlander, and Mize return for the Tigers.
