As the ruling of Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby has been the talk of the sports world for some time now, many people have given their thoughts on the matter. With the recent judge’s ruling that Sorsby will be eligible in 2026 to play for the Texas Tech football team, the NCAA president has given his honest take on everything.
Speaking in front of the National Association of Collegiate Directors on Tuesday, NCAA president Charlie Baker called out the ruling for being a precedent in a negative manner.
“This was pretty much a new low,” Baker said on the ruling, according to Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic.
Not only did Baker say that, but he also made it apparent that the NCAA won’t stand pat just yet on the decision, saying that they are looking into “every legal avenue” on an appeal.
“We will pursue every legal avenue available to us [in the appeal],” Baker said on Tuesday, according to Ben Chase.
The NCAA had initially ruled Sorsby ineligible for the 2026 season due to the gambling scandal that the quarterback was under, having placed thousands of bets, including when he was on the Indiana Hoosiers in 2022. Having transferred to the Cincinnati Bearcats and receiving a deal to head over to the Red Raiders, he was ready to make a mark with Texas Tech.
However, his actions in gambling have put a legal battle at the forefront of college football, as a recent judge’s ruling makes him eligible. Baker’s words indicate that the NCAA is not done yet fighting back, as it remains to be seen what the resolution looks like.
