Rangers rumors: The next Chris Drury re-tool trade could involve 23-year-old forward

It was a very rough season for the New York Rangers, who were not only the NHL’s worst club on home ice but also came nowhere close to making the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

First-year Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan, who was hired by GM Chris Drury to replace the fired Peter Laviolette, will remain in place for now despite speculation that his job could already be in danger. But the Rangers, who traded Artemi Panarin and were rumored to be trading Vincent Trocheck, could be on the verge of making more moves this offseason.

According to NHL Insider (and former Rangers goaltender) Kevin Weekes, the Rangers could potentially consider moving on from forward Brett Berard, whom they selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

“F Berard also could be on the move from (the) Rangers,” Weekes wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Beard, who recently wrapped up a three-year contract with a salary cap hit of $867,500, is eligible for restricted free agency once the calendar turns to July. He spent the majority of the season with the American Hockey League affiliate Hartford Wolf Pack, scoring six goals with sixteen assists in 41 games played. He also appeared in 13 games with the Rangers this season, but didn’t register a point.

He’s appeared in a total of 48 NHL games, including 35 last season. During that time, he’s scored six goals with four assists for 10 points. Before his professional career began, he played three seasons for Providence College in the NCAA while also playing for the United States National Development Team.
