Mammoth rumors: Utah interested in intriguing Red Wings goalie trade

The Utah Mammoth made the playoffs in their second season, but they are still looking to make improvements. The Mammoth are poking around in the trade market for Detroit Red Wings goalie Sebastian Cossa, per ESPN’s Kevin Weekes.

“I’m told G Cossa could be on the move with [the Mammoth] among the interested clubs,” Weekes reported.

Cossa was taken in the first round by the Red Wings in the 2021 NHL Draft, but has only played one NHL game. The Hamilton, Ontario native has played 123 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League, but has not broken through in Detroit.

The Mammoth have Karel Vejmelka under contract through the 2030 season, so the starting goalie role is spoken for. But taking a flyer on a former first-round pick is not a bad choice. If they are confident in Cossa’s ability and their own coaching staff, the Mammoth can take a chance on the goalie.

The Red Wings, on the other hand, are selling off a distressed asset after an odd run in the organization. Steve Yzerman has never quite figured out the goaltending position as Detroit’s general manager. He took Cossa in the first round in an effort to secure the franchise goalie they needed. Five years later, he’s ready for a divorce. The Red Wings traded for John Gibson last offseason.

The Mammoth sent three second-round picks to the Calgary Flames for Mackenzie Weegar at the trade deadline. That leaves them with a first-round pick, a stiff price for Cossa, and plenty of other mid-round picks.

The Red Wings may also trade captain Dylan Larkin this offseason, which could net them a huge return. If there is a goalie or a goalie prospect in that package, Cossa’s return price will not be a concern.
