What did Yankees’ Spencer Jones do with his 1st homerun ball?

Outfielder Spencer Jones played a massive role in the New York Yankees’ 3-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday. And now he’ll have a memento to hold onto forever.

Jones hit a two-run home run for the first long ball of his career. He made sure to keep the ball in a safe place after he retrieved it, via Brendan Kuty of the Athletic.

“Right now, I have it in a little ziplock bag,” Jones said. “I’ll have one of the guys write it up for me and I’ll keep it safe.”

Jones’ two-run blast traveled 443 feet and opened the scoring. But the Guardians would march back, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. An eighth inning home run from Jazz Chisholm then secured the victory for New York. The Yankees are now 40-26 on the season, tied for the AL East lead and holding an eight-game advantage in the Wild Card race.

As for Jones, he is now hitting .278 with a home run, five RBIs and a stolen bases through his first 14 games at the major league level. The Yankees will be paying close attention to how he continues to adapt against MLB pitching.

New York still has high expectations. Jones ranks as the No. 6 prospect in the organization, via MLB Pipeline. Furthermore, over his 425 games at the minor league level, the outfielder hit .271 with 85 home runs, 284 RBIs and 118 stolen bases.

The Yankees surely want to see more home runs out of Jones throughout his MLB career. On Tuesday, he gave them a taste of potential what’s to come.
