The 2025 NL Cy Young award winner then explained why he is not worried despite the team’s recent slide:
“We’re playing good baseball. We’ve been playing good baseball, and we’ve lost a few in a row, but I’m not worried about that at all. We’re gonna be fine.”
That message mattered because the final score did not reflect Skenes’ night. The Dodgers took control of the game only after Pittsburgh turned it over to the bullpen.
Wilber Dotel and Brandan Bidois struggled during a disastrous seventh inning. Los Angeles sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs, turning a close game into a rout.
The Pirates have now dropped four straight, but their season remains alive. Pittsburgh sits at 34-33, tied with the Chicago Cubs for third in the NL Central, 8.0 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers and 3.5 games behind the second-place St. Louis Cardinals.
For Pittsburgh, Tuesday was ugly. Still, Skenes gave the Pirates six competitive innings and then delivered the calm message a team needs during a difficult stretch without pretending the loss did not sting.
