Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee completes stunning feat last seen in 1932

At 27-41, the San Francisco Giants are in a non-optimal spot in the standings. It isn’t because they aren’t making contact, though. The team ranks second in all of baseball in batting average, as their .258 mark only trails the reigning back-to-back champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

Jung Hoo Lee, in particular, has been electric as a contact hitter. The outfielder has a .335 batting average, which is the second-best mark in MLB. The right fielder has been on fire in recent weeks. Lee is in the midst of a 17-game hit streak, and he is batting .508 (33-for-65) during that span.

Now, the Korean star has become the first Giants player since 1932 with 29+ hits over a 12-game span. Bill Terry in 1932 was the last player for the team to accomplish that feat. Terry also did so in 1930, and Edd Roush hit that mark in 1929.

In 617 plate appearances last year, Lee had just a .266 batting average. In fact, his batting average this year is greater than his on-base percentage (.327) was last year. The success the outfielder has found has been a pleasant surprise for the Giants, but San Francisco’s struggles may result in them becoming trade deadline sellers. If that becomes the case, Lee would certainly become a hot commodity.

Lee only has three home runs on the season. He isn’t going to contribute much as a power hitter, but he does exactly what the team needs out of their five hole. While it is impossible to predict anyone to be on Joe DiMaggio watch, Lee’s hitting streak is something to monitor going forward.
