Iran World Cup star puts U.S. government on blast for creating ‘tense atmosphere’

Ever since the war between the USA and Iran began a few months ago on Feb. 28, 2026, things have been extremely tense between the two nations. With Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup remaining dicey till the last moment, things finally reached a solution when they were able to shift their base to Tijuana in Mexico from their previous base in the USA.

However, despite this, things have still been dicey in the USA ahead of the World Cup. With special security checks taking place with the Senegal and Uzbekistan teams, news also spread of the USA Government denying the entry of the Somali award-winning referee Omar Artan. With tension rising, Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi stated that the USA Government’s recent steps have created a tense atmosphere around the tournament.

Iran arrived at their training camp in Mexico on Sunday morning, having flown from the Turkish city of Antalya on a private jet. In an interview with ESPN, Mehdi put the USA Government on notice with his recent statements.

“I’ve been to three World Cups and they always say once you get off the plane and you enter the host country, there’s just a unique atmosphere of friendliness and global-ness. Unfortunately, I’m not feeling it right now,” he said. “There’s a lot of tension right now in this World Cup. You feel it in the atmosphere and unfortunately, it’s because of actions like [visa denials]. Maybe that’s just my personal feeling.”

Iran is scheduled to play their first two games in Inglewood, California, against New Zealand on Monday, Jun. 15, 2026, and Belgium six days later. They then head to Seattle to face Egypt on Jun. 26, 2026. Iran and the USMNT have a chance of playing each other if they meet in the round of 32 on Jul. 3 in Arlington, Texas. Both teams need to finish second in their respective groups to do so.
