Braves place pitcher on IL, promote former Guardians star reliever

The Atlanta Braves announced four roster moves on Wednesday. Former Cleveland Guardians star reliever James Karinchak was selected from Triple-A. Another former Guardians star pitcher, Carlos Carrasco, was designated for assignment. Pitching prospect JR Ritchie was recalled from Triple-A as well while right-handed relief pitcher Tyler Kinley was placed on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.

Carrasco has been designated for assignment and re-signed multiple times by the Braves. It would not be surprising to see him end up with Atlanta once again. Ritchie made his MLB debut earlier this season. Now he is set to receive another big league opportunity.

Karinchak signed with the Braves this past offseason. The right-handed reliever last appeared at the MLB level with the Cleveland Guardians in 2023. There was a time when he was considered to be one of the better relievers in the sport. Karinchak holds a career 3.10 ERA.

He has performed well at Triple-A this season, pitching to a 2.45 ERA across 21 outings. It will be interesting to see if Karinchak can find success with the Braves.

Kinley, meanwhile, was placed on the IL. He has turned in a strong 3.18 ERA across 31 appearances this year. Losing him to injury is certainly far from ideal.

Overall, Atlanta holds a 45-22 record. The Braves are the best team in the league right now. In the National League East, Atlanta is currently  nine games ahead of the second place Philadelphia Phillies.

The Braves will play the Chicago White Sox on the road on Wednesday night at 7:40 PM EST.
