Cubs disappointing season gets even worse with White Sox reality

It’s been a roller coaster season for the Chicago Cubs. They went from being on two 10-game winning streaks to being 34-33 and 4th in the National League Central Division. Meanwhile, their cross-town rivals, the White Sox, are 35-31 and second in the American League Central Division.

On Tuesday, they won their 6th game out of 10 courtesy of a walk-off home run by rookie Braden Montgomery over the Atlanta Braves. As a result, the tide has turned in the Windy City.

Former White Sox catcher AJ Pierzynski makes it clear who the favorite is now, per Foul Territory.

“They’re the better team in Chicago, and we didn’t think we’d be saying that at the beginning of the year.”

This dynamic is a far cry from a year ago, when the Cubs made the playoffs, and the White Sox were dead last. The Cubs went 92-70 and solidified a wild-card birth. Eventually, they would lose to the Milwaukee Brewers in five games in the NLDS. Meanwhile, the White Sox finished 60-102, a year apart from a record-setting losing season 41-121.

The White Sox success has been attributable developement of a young core, hitting adjustments, and better pitching. Additionally, Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Vargas have emerged as effective hitters under the leadership of hitting coach Ryan Fuller.

Also, first year manager Will Venable has cultitave a strong winning culture in the clubhouse.

As for the Cubs, they are dealing with inconsistencies both at the plate and on the mound. Players such as Dansby Swanson has seen drastic underperformances as well as leaving players on base and pitchers blowing leads.
