Dave Roberts played as an outfielder in MLB for 10 seasons before accepting the manager job with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016. While he was a solid player, it turns out Roberts much prefers being a manager.
During an interview on “97.1 The Fan,” a sports radio show based in Los Angeles, Roberts, who is 54 years old, admitted that he likes managing more than playing because he feels he is in a position to make a bigger impact for the team in general. Dave Roberts explained how, as a player, it was more individually focused. So, being a manager is a more overall team experience, in his opinion.
“Actually, I enjoy managing more than I did playing,” said Roberts. “I say that because, playing, you got a very micro look at life and performance. A lot of it is about you and your individual performance, and yet, you want the team to win… As a manager, you have a chance to set the culture. Really impact lives and get a different, wider lens. So, when we win championships, I can really now appreciate how many people were involved in winning.”
It also probably doesn’t hurt that Roberts is managing one of the best major league rosters in recent history. But it’s not like the Dodgers were stacked right when he was initially hired 10 years ago, either.
During his journey as the manager of the Dodgers, Los Angeles has won three World Series titles (2020, 2024,2025). He was also named the NL Manager of the Year in 2016. While the team has plenty of talent everywhere, Dave Roberts has done his part in helping the club succeed.
