Joel Klatt goes scorched earth on ‘devastating’ Brendan Sorsby ruling

Fox Big Noon Kickoff’s Joel Klatt weighed in on the ruling on Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby. Sorsby was granted an injunction that allows him to play for Texas Tech in the 2026 season. The NCAA has filed an appeal.

Sorsby admittedly placed bets on several college football games during his time at Indiana, including at least 40 on his teammates. Per Sorsby, he bet on his teammates to succeed. The temporary injunction comes after Sorsby sued the NCAA for ruling him ineligible for his 2022 bets as a redshirt freshman for the Hoosiers. As a condition of the temporary injunction, he will not play in Texas Tech’s first two games this fall.

In a video on his social media accounts, Klatt weighed in on the Brendan Sorsby ruling and signaled a chilling effect on the college football landscape if he’s allowed to play.

“Brendan Sorsby being ruled eligible to play next fall in college football is devastating to the sport,” he said. “It just is. Um, and in particular the NCAA, and now the NCAA, they have no ability to enforce any rule whatsoever. If you can’t enforce this rule as, as an organization with member institutions, then what rule can you enforce? I mean, the guy bet thousands of times thousands of dollars. Like, what are, what are we doing?”

Clark also believes that the only path forward is federal legislation addressing incidents like the one involving Sorsby.

“So where do we go from this point moving forward? Well, I think now the only path is going to be federal legislation, because without antitrust protection, there’s gonna be no entity, whether it’s the NCAA or the CSC, College Sports Commission, no entity that’s gonna have any backbone whatsoever in terms of enforcement, and that’s what we have to have is enforcement. If you can’t enforce this rule, then what are we doing?”
