Texas Tech Red Raiders’ new quarterback, Brendan Sorsby, was recently given an injunction from a judge overturning his ban from the 2026-27 college football season. He still faces a two-game suspension for allegedly placing multiple thousands of dollars on wagers, including college football games on his team at the time with the Indiana Hoosiers. On Wednesday, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire defended Sorsby.
McGuire informed everyone that the redshirt senior is in the process of recovering from a gambling addiction, according to Paul Finebaum of ESPN. The fourth-year head coach admitted he is surprised by how much uproar Sorsby’s situation has caused, as he stated that gambling on sports games is not nearly as bad as committing a more serious crime like murder or even assault.
“Brendan Sorsby is recovering from an addiction,” said McGuire. “He’s recovering… I’ve sat down with this young man multiple times, and the things that he is going through, and what he’s been through. It’s serious… As a society, we’ve been okay with other things that happen. And allowing players to play, and this is the one thing that has united people that they were against. It’s crazy. Because it’s not murder, it’s not beating somebody.”

Sorsby joined Texas Tech through the transfer portal this offseason after playing for the Cincinnati Bearcats the last two years. He ended the 2025-26 campaign with 2,800 passing yards and 27 touchdowns with a 61.6% completion percentage. Sorsby also added 580 yards and nine more touchdowns on the ground.
He is slated to be the new starting quarterback for Texas Tech now that he’s been cleared to play next season. However, the controversy and outside noise will likely remain loud for Brendan Sorsby for quite some time.
