Bob Stauffer stated that McDavid and Leon Draisaitl were committed to Edmonton, which was why he believed they would stay. Notably, he stated that the extension would be seven years because that is the new ABA standard.
There has been a lot of talk about McDavid’s extension and whether he will truly stay in Edmonton. Ultimately, much of this may hinge on what happens with Babcock and whether he becomes their next head coach. With all this going on, the Oilers have multiple priorities they must sort. There are also rumors that McDavid is involved in this process and has a say in who the new coach will be.
After two consecutive trips to the Stanley Cup, the Oilers floundered this season, falling to the Anaheim Ducks in The First Round. The loss resulted in the Oilers firing Kris Knoblauch. Thus, the search for a new coach has continued, as the Oilers look to bounce back next season.
The setback also created a new mystery around Edmonton. Now, there is even more pressure to win, especially with McDavid’s contract expiring in two seasons. If Stauffer is correct, there will be a lot more McDavid in Edmonton and much more success in the city.
