Tigers likely getting another pitching boost after Tarik Skubal return announcement

The Detroit Tigers gave some good news when they revealed that Tarik Skubal will return to the mound. Now, there is more possible good news on the horizon, as another starting pitcher could return to the Tigers’ rotation this weekend, according to Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck.

“Casey Mize will return from IL and start Sunday in Cleveland if all goes as planned, A.J. Hinch said. Troy Helton would then start Monday in Houston. Six-man rotation looking like logical step, Hinch added,” Beck wrote on X.

These returns would be a major boost for the Tigers, who are currently 28-40 and tied with the Kansas City Royals for fourth in the AL Central. Notably, their battered rotation has been a major reason for their struggles. But the impending returns of Skubal and Mize could provide some relief.

Despite the rotation being in flux, the Tigers still rank eighth in team ERA. Additionally, their bullpen is 14th in team ERA. The Tigers currently trail the Chicago White Sox by 8 1/2 games in the division, meaning there is still a chance of a surge.

Mize has been out since leaving a start against the Los Angeles Angels. Significantly, this is his second stint on the IL, and he has been unable to stay healthy. With his return, Mize hopes to stay on the field and be the second-best pitcher in the rotation behind Skubal. If everything goes according to plan, he will make his start on Sunday. The Tigers will face the Cleveland Guardians this weekend, so every game will matter as they attempt to climb back up the standings.
