Tigers urged not to trade Tarik Skubal before deadline

The Detroit Tigers are probably going to trade Tarik Skubal if they are unable to bounce back in the standings. Skubal trade rumors are already swirling. Additionally, Skubal is expected to return from his elbow injury on Saturday, so he will have plenty of time to build up his trade value before the deadline. However, former MLB manager Buck Showalter does not believe the Tigers should trade the ace despite the fact that he is set to enter free agency following the season.

“There’s three scenarios there, you’re gonna trade him (Skubal), you’re gonna keep him, and you make sure that your manager knows that he’s going to be there for a long time,” Showalter said on Foul Territory. “I mean, AJ Hinch is a pretty established guy. But he’s (Skubal) pretty special, before you start entertaining thoughts of moving him… You’re always looking for that guy, and you’ve got him.

“I know you can get a lot back, but who is making decisions on what is fair to get back for him? The world is full of those four and five for ones that end up with a backup catcher, a utility infielder, a long reliever and a fourth outfielder.”

Showalter does not want to see the Tigers acquire four or five prospects who end up not meeting expectations at the big league level. Of course, that is always a risk teams take when they trade stars away. The chances of Detroit re-signing Skubal this offseason are slim since he is expected to receive possibly the biggest contract ever for a pitcher. If the Tigers end up not trading him, they will risk losing him in free agency for almost nothing in return.
