Larry David only stuck around for comeback because of John McEnroe

The New York Knicks are collecting themselves after pulling off a historic 29-point comeback in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday to win 107-106. The Knicks now have a commanding 3-1 lead over the San Antonio Spurs, putting them one game away from winning their first title since 1973.

All the stars were aligned at Madison Square Garden—Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Fat Joe, and so on. However, comedian Larry David was tempted to leave, given the seemingly insurmountable deficit. But then, tennis legend John McEnroe convinced him to stay, per The Dan Patrick Show.

“Larry’s (David) like, ‘Let’s get out of here, I can’t handle this anymore!’ McEnroe said to Patrick. “I’m like, ‘Larry, take a deep breath here!'”

The Knicks genuinely seemed down and out. Following a demoralizing defeat during Game 3, it was as if the Spurs had regained the momentum. But then the Knicks mustered the courage, thanks to a few particulars, to make history.

Victor Wembanyama’s first-half dominance put the Spurs ahead 81-52 in the third quarter. But then, the Knicks went on a historic 58-30 run led by the leadership of Jalen Brunson, who finished with 36 points. Jose Alvarado came off the bench and became the unsung hero in 16 minutes with 8 points.

Then, of course, OG Anunoby’s heroic tip-in in the final seconds will live on in the annals of history.

So it was great that David, a famed star of Curb Your Enthusiasm, stuck around, and that McEnroe had the wherewithal to believe it wasn’t over.

Game 5 is scheduled for Saturday at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio at 7:30 pm CST/8:30 pm EST.
