Phillies trade for White Sox outfielder in pre-deadline move

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly acquiring outfielder Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox in a trade, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. Philadelphia is also acquiring internal bonus money for outfielder Dylan Campbell and infielder Jose Colmenares.

The trade will not make or break either teams’ season, but it is a move that offers depth for both ball clubs.

Hill, 30, leads the trade. He has appeared in 50 games with the White Sox this season, hitting .213/.284/.375 during that span. Hill has four home runs as well.

The Phillies’ lineup has been led by Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh this year. Overall, a number of other Phillies have struggled. Bringing in another outfielder for depth purposes is not a bad idea.

Meanwhile, the White Sox have upset expectations up to this point in the season. Chicago currently leads the American League Central standings. Heading into the season, the Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals were expected to compete for the division. While the Guardians are only a half-game behind the White Sox, the Tigers and Royals have struggled throughout the campaign.

The Phillies and White Sox could end up in the postseason. It will be interesting to see what other moves both teams make ahead of the MLB trade deadline.

For now, the Phillies are focused on their upcoming series this weekend against the Milwaukee Brewers. The White Sox, meanwhile, are set to play the final game of their current series against the Atlanta Braves at 7:40 PM EST on Thursday.
