Tigers claim ex-Dodgers outfielder after being DFA’d by Twins

The Minnesota Twins recently designated outfielder James Outman for assignment. On Thursday, the Tigers claimed Outman off waivers from the Twins, the team announced. Outman, who was once a promising prospect with the Dodgers, is set for the next chapter of his MLB career with Detroit.

Javier Baez was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster for Outman.

Outman, 29, joined the Twins in 2025. In 2026, the outfielder played 49 games with Minnesota, hitting .156/.229/.250 across 70 plate appearances. While Outman has displayed signs of potential in the past, he has yet to find consistent success at the big league level since his rookie year.

In 2023, Outman finished third in National League Rookie of the Year voting after hitting .248/.353/,437 to go along with 23 home runs. It seemed like he was on track to become a star, but he has struggled to replicate his performance since the ’23 campaign.

Detroit is 29-40 overall and in fourth place in the American League Central standings. The Tigers are eight games behind the Chicago White Sox for first place in the division.

Perhaps the addition of Outman will help the Tigers take a step forward. If he finds his rhythm and begins performing up to his expectations, Outman could end up making a significant impact with the ball club.

The Tigers defeated the Twins 11-0 on Thursday afternoon. On Friday night, Detroit is set to begin a three-game series against the Guardians in Cleveland. First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST at Progressive Field.
