The New York Mets got back into the win column on Sunday, earning a 7-3 victory over the San Diego Padres. Leading the way was rookie outfielder Carson Benge.
Benge went 5-for-5 at the plate, hitting both a triple and a home run. He became just the 13th player in MLB history to go perfect in his five at-bats while hitting a triple and home run, via Mike Mayer of Metsmerized.
Batting leadoff on Sunday, it’s clear the outfielder has already become a favorite of manager Carlos Mendoza. Despite being a rookie, Benge will be trusted to continue being a leader of the Mets’ offense. New York is in desperate need, as even with their win on Sunday, they are still 15.5 games back in the NL East with a 29-36 record.
Through his first 62 games at the major league level, Benge is hitting .265 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He has been on fire to start June, hitting .360 with three home runs, five RBIs and a stolen base over his first six games. Furthermore, Benge leads the Mets in stolen bases and ranks third in both home runs and RBIs.
Despite their record, New York has plenty of firepower in their lineup. Juan Soto’s performance remains unquestioned. But Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert and Francisco Alvarez are all on the injured list. Bo Bichette has yet to live up to expectations.
Benge can’t do everything on his own, despite however impressive his rookie season is deemed. But he is developing into a key piece for New York for the foreseeable future. Another 5-for-5 day with a triple and home run would secure his spot atop the lineup.
