JT Poston has his fourth PGA Tour win, taking home the Memorial Tournament in a playoff over Ryan Gerard. The North Carolinian emerged from a crowded group that featured Tommy Fleetwood and Sam Burns to secure the win. Poston birdied the 18th hole in regulation to force the playoff, and then made a par on the second playoff hole.

Gerard started the day 8-under, two shots back of Poston. A bogey on the third hole proved to be the only mistake, adding five birdies along the way. He drained a 36-footer on the 17th to get to 12-under par and holed a 5-foot slider on the 18th to make the playoff. But a short par putt on the 18th turned into his demise, as he missed on the second playoff hole to cede the win to Poston.
Poston entered the day with the lead, but collapsed to the pack around the turn. He made bogeys on 9, 12, and 13 to fall all the way to 9-under. Two bounce-back birdies brought him into a tie for the lead late in the day. Then on the 18th, he hit a brilliant approach shot to just 7’5″, and he drilled the birdie. He missed a similar birdie putt on the first playoff hole, giving Gerard an extra chance. But it was Poston in the end who won with his second par in the playoff.
Sam Burns put together a solid Sunday round, but was undone by a brutal approach shot on 17. He had to hit a chip off of a footbridge and nearly made the putt for a par. But once that putt missed, his chances were dashed. Burns finished 10-under, two shots back.
Out of the crowded pack, Tommy Fleetwood started the furthest back. He was six shots behind the leader when the final round started, but took the solo lead momentarily on the back nine. Fleetwood hit an incredible second shot on the par-5 15th to be the first player at 11-under. A bogey on 17 ruined his chances at a win, but it was a 68 on Sunday, losing by two.
Wyndham Clark won his most recent start, taking home the CJ Cup Byron Nelson two weeks ago. On Sunday at The Memorial, one tee shot prevented him from picking up a second straight win. He dumped his tee shot on the par-13 12th into the bunker, leading to a bogey. He made birdies on 15 and 16 to get to 11-under, but it wasn’t quite enough.
What is next on PGA Tour after Memorial?

Next week, the RBC Canadian Open tees off at TPC Toronto. Ryan Fox won in a playoff with Burns last year, so Burns will be looking to bounce back from two disappointing finishes. This is the last event before the U.S. Open, which takes place at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island.
Both Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler were in the field at Jack’s Place, but with no success. McIlroy has never won the Memorial and could not overcome a Friday 74 this week. He shot 68 on Sunday to finish T12. Scheffler had won the last two events at Murfield Village, but was alongside McIlroy at T12 after a rough Thursday round.
Scheffler will be vying for the career Grand Slam at Shinnecock. If he completes it, he would become the seventh man to win all four majors, including McIlroy and Nicklaus. McIlroy is looking for his second major of the season after winning the Masters. Only 11 men have won seven major championships, and McIlroy would become the 12th with a win.
