The New York Yankees finally put their foot down with Anthony Volpe earlier this season, sending him to the minors. But one Jose Caballero injury brought him back to The Bronx, and things have not improved. Volpe was up with the bases loaded against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday when Yankees radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman took a shot at him.
“It’s really odd. He’s just lost it here. I’m sure he knows to whom he’s pitching.”

Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez started Volpe 3-0 with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth inning. Waldman said, “It’s really odd. He’s just lost it here. I’m sure he knows to whom he’s pitching.” Volpe watched strike one go by before flying out to centerfield to end the inning.
This was not the only mistake Volpe made on Sunday that cost the Yankees a run. With the speedy Ceddanne Rafaela on first base, Willson Contreras roped a double to left field. Cody Bellinger played it well and got the ball to Volpe with Rafaela still rounding third. Volpe’s throw was dreadfully offline, and the Red Sox scored easily.
The Yankees were getting great shortstop play from Caballero before the injury. With Aaron Judge out, they are utilizing Caballero’s defensive versatility to fill an outfield role. That forces Volpe back to shortstop, even though the evidence proves that Caballero is better at that position.
The Yankees have lost four of their last six games and are trying to avoid a two-game sweep at the hands of the Red Sox on Sunday. Coming into this game, Volpe has a .136 batting average and a .310 OPS in his last six games. Dreadful offensive output and poor defensive details are not what the Yankees need without Judge.
After Sunday’s game, the Yankees head to Cleveland to take on the Guardians. They opened this homestand by dropping two of three to the AL Central’s best club.
