Giancarlo Stanton suffers potential injury setback

It’s been two months since New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the injured list due to a calf problem. As a result, he has missed 44 games dating back to April 24.

But just when it seemed as if he was coming back, he suffered a setback. Stanton felt a tweak in his calf while running the bases, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Therefore, his return to the team is expected to be delayed. He was expected to be at their home series against the Chicago White Sox beginning June 16.

On April 24, Stanton was taken out of a game against the Houston Astros due to a right calf strain. It came during the sixth inning when he was going from first to second base. Afterward, he was placed on the MLB 10-day injured list.

Stanton was batting .256 with 23 hits, 3 home runs, and 14 RBIs. Meanwhile, the Yankees are battling for first place in the American League East with the rival Tampa Bay Rays. New York is 41-26, and the Rays are 40-26.

In his absence, the Yankees have had a huge void in the areas of lineup production, particularly in right-handed hitting. Therefore, opposing pitchers have made it a point to aim for their left-handed hitters.

It also compels pitchers to pitch around the rest of the lineup with greater confidence and poise.

The Yankees are in the midst of a three-game road series against the Toronto Blue Jays. They lost the first game on Friday, 8-5.

The return of Stanton remains unknown.
