The Texas Rangers took another roster hit Saturday, placing center fielder Evan Carter on the 10-day injured list before the second game of their three-game series vs. the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Carter’s absence gives the Rangers another outfield concern because his defense remains a major part of the club’s run prevention. Cody Freeman now joins the active roster after being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.
The move came one day after Carter felt right oblique soreness during Friday’s 10-1 loss. The injury followed a diving catch that robbed Isiah Kiner-Falefa, turning a strong defensive play into a frustrating setback.
The club’s official PR team posted on X, formerly Twitter, announcing the roster moves before Saturday’s matchup in Boston.
“Additional transactions for Saturday:
-OF Cody Freeman (#39) recalled from Round Rock (AAA)
-OF Evan Carter placed on 10-day Injured List”

The timing creates a difficult twist for Texas. Manager Skip Schumaker had already planned to sit Carter vs. Boston’s left-handed starters this weekend because of his struggles in those matchups.
Carter has recorded just one hit vs. left-handed pitching this season. Still, the IL move removes late-game flexibility, especially because he can defend center field at a high level and offer a pinch-hitting option if the Red Sox turn to right-handed relief.
Freeman gets an immediate chance to help. Texas placed him in Saturday’s starting lineup at second base, giving the Rangers another right-handed bat and a fresh option after Friday’s lopsided loss.
Oblique issues can linger if rushed, so Texas will hope Carter needs only the minimum stay. For now, the club enters Game 2 of its three-game series vs. the Red Sox with a thinner outfield and another depth test.
