Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s confident ABS challenge hilariously backfires

As New York Yankees star Jazz Chisholm Jr. has led the team with this talent, there is one area of his game that has been a negative trend all season. With Chisholm and others looking to fill the Yankees’ void left by Aaron Judge, the star would once again make an error when it comes to the newly implemented Automated Ball-Strike System (ABS).

During the Yankees’ 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, Chisholm challenged a strike call by the umpire that the 28-year-old thought clearly was a ball, to the point where he was taking off his gear, ready to go to first base. However, the review would show the pitch was clearly inside the strike zone.

The series of events happened in the top of the fourth inning, where the pitch count was at 3-0, and while he would be issued a strike after the ABS challenge, the very next pitch would be a fastball outside, resulting in a walk for Chisholm. Either way, there’s no denying that people will focus on another head-scratching ABS challenge, as after the failed one on Saturday, Chisholm has only hit on four of them out of 15 attempts.

Yankees’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. is known for a low success rate with ABS

Chisholm has been known for his ABS challenges this season, as one could see by the low success rate, even being asked about it after the Yankees’ 12-4 win over the Houston Astros on April 24. The star would challenge a strike-three call in the ninth inning when the game was already out of hand, and it showed the ball was thrown virtually down the middle.

“You just gotta laugh at that point,” Chisholm said, via New York Daily News. “We’re winning. It’s a kid’s game. You gotta laugh at some things. Sometimes you just gotta laugh at yourself.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen what Chisholm’s success rate for ABS challenges looks like down the line when the season is over, and if there will be any talks with manager Aaron Boone and the staff about it after Saturday’s turn of events.
